QUICK BITE: First Day on Odyssey of the Seas

Easy boarding process for the Odyssey of the Seas at Terminal 18 in Port Everglades.   So blessed to be able  to cruise!!   Love our cabin!

We purchased the UDP (Unlimited Dining Package) so will be trying all the speciality restaurants.   Had a great lunch at Giovanni's. Stromboli, Giant Meatball, charcuterie platter, chicken fettuccine and chicken parmesan.  And the waiter insisted we try the tiramisu with complimentary limoncello. So good!!

QUICK BITE: Aruba Beach Cafe in Lauderdale By The Sea

Our cruise on the Emerald Princess went to Aruba.  So when we found a beach bar called Aruba Beach Cafe, it seemed like the place was calling out to us.  And then we looked at the menu.

It had items named after other ports we had visited on the two prior cruises (Bimini and Athens).   What was going on here?   Actually some delicious food.  We got an order of the coconut fried shrimp and then the Cobb salad and the Athens Greek Salad with ahi tuna.

Large, tasty shrimp with a crisp but not greasy coasting. A mildly spicy chili sauce for dipping. And both salads had crispy greens and toppings.  There was so much ahi tuna!!   Slightly seared with a sesame crust.

Gala Night on Emerald Princess

There have been three formal nights on this sailing but the menus in the main dining room for the first two didn't really wow me.   For the last formal night, Princess pulled out all the stops.  Escargot!!  Wedge salad!  Lobster!!  Roasted pork tenderloin!!   Beef Wellington!  Oh my!!

Started with escargot.  They were served in the traditional manner.

Here shows you the delicate morsel.

Typically, the escargot are served in a buttery blend that is heavy on garlic. These has an interesting twist in that the broth was closed to a decadent french onion soup.  Such a great idea to pair these flavors.

Next was the wedge salad.

I have had a few Caesar salads on this cruise and they have been okay.  The have had anchovies which is a plus.  However the Princess Caesar dressing lacks any punch. I like a Caesar where you get a good amount of the umami from the anchovies.

Where the Caesar dressing is lacking, the blue cheese dressing almost makes up for it.  Rich, creamy and full of nice pieces of blue cheese.  And this salad was ice cold which is also a plus for any salad.  Even the plate was cold.   Not many things worse than using a warm or room temperature plate for something that is best cold.  The lettuce was crisp. There was a bit of chive for additional flavor.  And there was smokey bacon. And they also had some minced red onion. This was a smart idea since large chunks of onion would have overwhelmed the salad.

Next was the lobster. It was served broiled over a bed of risotto.

Often times cruise ships will serve Caribbean lobster on lobster night and not cold water lobster.  While these ocean creatures share a name, they couldn't me more different in taste and texture. Caribbean lobsters, also known as spiny lobsters, have no claws  It would be like comparing crawfish and shrimp. Both could be tasty in the right preparation but there are not substitutes for each other.

Here it was cold water lobster that had been broiled.  Unfortunately, it wouldn't have mattered whether we were served Caribbean lobster or one from cold water.  Somehow the lobster had an extreme salty flavor.  I am thinking it could have been brined for packing which could have given it the rubbery texture that made it tough to chew.  Certainly my least favorite item of the night.

Next was a the pork tenderloin.

This came with a small amount of savory stuffing.  And the outside had been crusted with a small amount of seasoned bread crumbs. Lots of flavor all around.  My experience with pork on cruise ships is the chefs cook it until it is nearly bone dry without any moisture.  Pork only needs to be cooked to a temperature of 150° to be safe to eat.   It is not like chicken where you want to cook until 165°.  The chefs here had followed that and produced a very juicy pork.  So flavorful. And the crisp bread crumb coating added a welcome texture.

And the final entree was beef Wellington.

I usually don't order a lot of red meat on a cruise since it is very hard to get it cooked to order.  I usually order rare to make sure I get at least a medium.  The period night I had order beef tenderloin to medium rare and to my great surprise it came out to order. So I was going to order the Wellington to the temperature I wanted which was medium rare. And it came out exactly how I wanted it!!

The beef was so tender!!   Barely needed a fork. And simply seasoned.  The mushroom duxelle had minced mushrooms and garlic surrounding the meat.  You could take just a little of it with each bite.  If there was one flaw, it was the pastry.  This should have been crispier.  It was a little doughy and the pan sauce, while super flavorful,  just soaked into the pastry. Not a bad taste. Just not the texture I wanted.  But minor flaw and in no way detracted from how delicious this was.

For dessert, I chose a chocolate pistachio dome.

The outside was very much like J-E-L-L-O!!  Jello pudding that is. In both taste and texture. Not necessarily a bad thing, I was hoping for something lighter and more like a mousse.  It was on top of a pistachio cookie.  Inside was my favorite part. It had a center of pistachio creme which had the best flavors from a great pistachio ice cream.

They also served some petit-fours.

Clockwise the bottom was a key lime tart, chocolate walnut fudge, chocolate almond bite and finally what I could only call a chocolate chip cake. The chocolate almond but was my favorite. It was like those Hershey nuggets with almonds.  I was really hopeful for the key like tart but it had no citrus flavor at all.  I only tasted vanilla along with the crispy graham cracker crust.

Overall an outstanding final formal night meal in the main dining room. I don't think a specialty dinner at the Crown Grill steakhouse could have topped this. It bodes well for my next cruise on this same class of ship in February.

QUICK BITE: Lucy's in Oranjsted Aruba

Lunch anyone?   Some delicious smoked fish dip, fish tacos and a really great burger!!!  Check out Lucy's the next time you are in Aruba.  A short walk from the cruise terminal.  It is also near many of the higher end stores.  So it is a good break if someone in your party is a shopper and you just need a cocktail break and a snack.

QUICK BITE: Friendly Reminder: Eat Local!!

I see it far too often.  People use their vacation budget on a cruise and are so excited about visiting other countries.  They do a lot of research on which excursions to take.  Where the beat beaches are.  Or which ports have the best shopping.  All important information.  But people don't seem to take enough time to find truly local restaurants in the places they visit. Restaurants where you can experience the flavors and foods. It is too easy to find a chain restaurant.   The Hard Rocks, Hooters, KFC and TGIFs welcome this. But if travellers spent just a little more time, they could eat and drink at some great places.

During our touring of Curacao, we had approached lunch time.  Our tour guide gave us a couple of options. We could have lunch at the resort buffet which I am sure would have had some tasty food.  Or we could go to a local spot. It was an easy answer.  Go local!!

Our tour guide took us for a drive down by the docks - right in the water.  Now looking at this place from the outside, you would think you were entering an abandoned shack.  It had a small porch with a couple of tables.  Once you insider you were immediately in an area they used the the kitchen.  There was a stove top which had a larger pot of stew cooking and to one side wa a deep fat fryer which had various things sizzling away. I joked to my wife that we were about to have the ultimate "open kitchen" meal.

The name of the restaurant was  Purunchi.

As we walked further into the restaurant there was another area with a few tables, just beyond the kitchen. We checked with the hostess who brought us to get another "room".  And it's in quotes because it wasn't technically a room. At least not using any standards I am familiar with.  This room was a dock. Plain and simple. Connected to the main building by a few thin ropes.

As soon as you stepped "onboard" you knew you were on the water since the platform moved quite a bit.  Have you ever heard of those small planes where they have to balance the passenger load in order to take off safely?  It felt similar to that here since as soon as we sat down, the dock took a dramatic lilt to our side. Thankfully , another set of guests were seated on opposite side which balanced it.  Although only temporarily since one person in that party said she was getting seasick!!  So we tilted yet again!  I never felt in danger. It only added to the charm of the place.

As for the menu?  There isn't really a menu.  They had three kinds of fresh fish.  Whole red snapper, grilled mahi mahi and barracuda. I never give up an opportunity for a whole fried fish sonI ordered the snapper.  My wife ordered the mahi mahi.

Alll the dishes come with a salad, grilled plantains and avocado.    All nice side dishes, but it is all about the fish.  And such great flavor.  While the snapper was perfectly cooked, crispy and moist, it was the mahi mahi which was the star if the show.  It had been marinated in what I will call and onion salsa which has nice hints of vinegar. They served a bowl of that on the size along with some rice and polenta. The onion and vinegar added such a nice contrast to the fish. And that sauce!!  I will see if I duplicate it home.  It seemed to be carmelized onions that had been macerated with a savory vinegar.  And great addition!!

There was also a spicy salsa that had some fruity ghost peppers.   Perfect amount of spice and fruitiness.

And the aftermath?

Could we have had a good meal at the buffet?  Probably.  But we had a great meal and even better experience by eating local.

QUICK BITE: International Tart Day?

Is today International Tart Day and no one told me? So many savory tarts at breakfast this morning. I believe there were at least six to choose from.

These are the three I picked. Clockwise from the upper left. Spinach and gruyere. Bacon and carmelized onions with cheddar. Crab and asparagus with beschamel.

All of these suffered a bit since they weren't warmed up. The cheese wasn't melted either. As far as flavors, the crab had the best. Sweet crabmeat, al dente asparagus and a creamy beschamel. If it had been warm this would be a winning dish.

QUICK BITE: Medallion App Food Delivery on Emerald Princess

I love when you can be at the pool and have food delivered to your chair. The Medallion App on Princess does that one better. You can have food delivered anywhere you are on the ship. Your cabin. A lounge. Or at the pool. Virtually anywhere.

This was a delicious chicken salad sandwich on multi grain along with some creamy guac and chips.

QUICK BITE: More Emerald Princess Buffet Breakfast

Definitely a fusion breakfast today!!  Deviled egg along with Fruit Looped Brioche French Toast and Aloo Mutter.  Also Pork Adobe with garlic rice and a fried egg.

Aloo Mutter is an Indian dish made with peas and potatoes in a tomato based sauce usually seasoned with garlic, cumin and garlic.  Just enough spice to give you a kick start that the coffee here just isn't able to do.

QUICK BITE: Emerald Princess Tea Time

It's three o'clock!! Tea for two.and two for tea!! Tea Time!!

Usually has some of the best bites on a cruise ship. This one didn't disappoint.

Clockwise from the top left is a cream cake, chocolate layer cake, sardine sandwich and smoked.chicken. And the reveal!!

And of course you need to get your scone on!! This time with whipped cream and apricot jam. They don't serve proper clotted cream on the ship.

There was no choice of tea. They served a very nice blended tea from a large tea pot.

The sardine sandwich was my favorite. Really more like a smoked fish spread on a mini brioche. A little lettuce for some crunch. The smoked chicken was moist with great flavor. Tomato and avocado added some freshness.

The scones were all kept warm before they served them. Easily split open to hold the cream and jam.

They have offered this every day of the cruise so far except embarkation day. Just in case you got hungry between lunch and dinner.
